DIY Hand Painted Decorative Tiles

Everyone likes to personalize their space, be it at home or work. A great way to do this is with easily created custom hand painted ceramic tiles. Useful sizes are the 4" x 4" up to the 12" x 12". I find the under 4" x 4" tiles to be too small for display, and the larger 18" x 18" too large for displaying on a plate easel. The 18" x 18" tiles would work display nicely framed and hung on the wall, or inserted as a end table or coffee table top, with a glass cover.
The best tiles I've found to use are the ones that are unglazed. If you use glazed tiles you have to roughen the glaze enough so that the primer will adhere to the surface.
The supplies you'll absolutely need are:

• Tiles, preferable unglazed
• Acrylic or oil paint. Acrylic is faster drying and easier clean up, oil may be more durable over the long term but is much slower drying. Acrylic latex indoor/outdoor paint also works.
• Clear polyurethane appropriate for the paint you've chosen. I prefer the water based over acrylic paint.
• Something to paint with, as simple as your fingers, sponges, brushes or any other creative tool you can think of.
• Work space where you can work without having to finish everything in one sitting, preferably with good ventilation.

That's it! Told you it would be simple. So what are you going to paint? That's up to you, and should be something you're comfortable with as far as skill level goes. I personally prefer to do abstract paintings, as they are personal and unique to myself. Others prefer to do floral renditions, wild life, or whatever else may take their fancy.
Remember, tiles are an inexpensive canvas on which to paint. I can purchase the unglazed ceramic tiles (12" x 12") where I live for less than $1 each. Even considering the cost of paint, brushes and polyurethane, I can have beautiful custom painted tiles for less than $5 each, and can sell them for around $30 or more each, when I wish to part with them. They also make great gifts for giving to family and friends. So what are you waiting for? Go grab some old clothes, set up a table with a plastic drop cloth, grab your paints and tile and get started!

When making mosaics, your safety is of paramount importance. You must understand, observe, and apply common-sense safety practices when working with mosaics. It's just good common sense to apply safety practices when working with sharp glass, caustic grout, finishing materials, and various glass cutting tools. Never take shortcuts when safety is a concern. The following are some basic--but important-- safety tips you should follow when making mosaics.
Wear eye protection when cutting or breaking materials for your tesserae, especially when working with glass. Tiny shards can fly in multiple directions when cutting. They can also bounce off nearby objects and fly into your eyes. Eye protection is especially necessary when prying up tesserae to correct mistakes. If the adhesive has cured, the tesserae material sometimes shatters instead of coming up clean when prying it away from the base material. When it shatters, lots of tiny shards fly everywhere. If you wear vision glasses, putting on a pair of goggles or protective glasses over them can be an annoyance, but don't skimp on safety. Find a type of eye protection (i.e., goggles or safety glasses) that fit over your vision glasses and feel comfortable. Once you get used to them, they'll no longer be a nuisance and your eyes will love you for taking safety seriously.
When using adhesives that emit harmful fumes (e.g., solvent-based adhesives), always work in a well-ventilated area. Don't sit cooped up in your work space with an open container of solvent-based adhesive. Open a window and use a fan, or better yet, do your adhering in an outdoor environment, such as an open and ventilated garage or porch. Read and heed all safety warnings on the product label.
Wear a protective mask when mixing grout. This is just as important as wearing eye protection. Don't ignore it! Grout is a cement product. Cement hardens without air and in wet environments. If you breathe in grout particles (i.e., the dust that clouds up when you pour dry grout from the bag into your mixing container), those particles will harden in your lungs. Not good! Protect yourself by wearing a dust mask. They're cheap and you can get them at any thrift or home improvement store. A 5-pack of white dust masks costs about two bucks, and a single mask can be used many times before clogging. Two bucks is a small price to pay to protect your lungs.
Wear protective gloves when working with grout. Cheap rubber or plastic gloves are adequate. Grout is mildly caustic and can cause skin irritations. A box of 200 of the plastic gloves typically used by food handlers costs about five bucks at the local bulk superstore.
Don't allow children or pets access to tesserae pieces, which can be cutting or choking hazards. Teach children and train pets to stay away when you're working your mosaic magic. If your child is creating the mosaic, always provide close supervision and don't leave them alone for a second.
When handling cut tesserae, especially glass, be careful not to cut yourself on the sharp edges or pointy points.
Follow proper safety precautions when making mosaics. Don't dismiss the importance of never taking shortcuts with your safety.

The machines tend to be pricey but they are very effective and worth investing in if you find yourself constantly cleaning showers, tubs, countertops, and even floors. A small steam machine can greatly reduce the amount of time and labor it takes to accomplish even the largest or dirtiest shower tile cleaning project. Larger machines are great for periodic or big cleaning projects. You don't have to purchase one of these big machines because many cleaning equipment rental companies offer reasonable rental rates. An Insight Into the Tools & Materials Required For Floor Tiling - Pocket Tools & Safety Equipment

Among the handy tools which you should have by your side constantly, there is no doubt that having a suitable knife and a good pencil will normally come of great benefit at most times. The best knives to get are the retractable ones with either the disposable replacement blades, or the cheaper versions with the snap-off blades, both of which Stanley make good quality brands of all round, hence the commonly used generalized term of the "Stanley knife".

Perfect for many tiling and grouting aspects, I find I rarely ever do a tiling job without it being there in one of the many pockets of my cargo pants, which I must say are an essential tool also in their own right.
Speaking of attire, other essential pieces of equipment which you should never be without are certain lines of personal protective safety gear. Whether you are working with power tools or even just using a hammer and chisel, you should definitely pay attention to protecting both your eyes and ears wherever applicable.
Polycarbonate safety glasses are an ideal lightweight and inexpensive way for protecting your eyesight against rouge chips when cutting or chiseling, however bulkier safety goggles will do the same job, but they do have a tendency to mist up. For ear protection when working with noisy tools, ear muffs are ideal for blocking out those unwanted sounds which can eventually result in long term hearing damage, although for a less bulky option then cheap disposable ear plugs work just as effectively without being so cumbersome.
Lastly, when dealing with laying floor tiles, you will find that you will be on your knees most of the time when doing the job. This can be really uncomfortable without the use of a pair of knee pads, and basically all you need without having to break the bank on a professional pair of pads, are just simple foam pads such as the ones suitable for gardening. They are less bulky and way cheaper than the professional tradesman's knee pad, but if you were feeling inventive enough, you could even improvise with a large old pair of socks with the feet cut off, or the sleeves of an old sweater pulled up over your knees with pieces of upholstery foam inserted. It's the small things like these that could eventually help save on your budget, and no matter how ridiculous you may look doing your floor tiling project, in the end you'll be the one that's laughing by saving on spending costs.

Maximize Your Cleaning Efforts on Tile, Grout Or Marble!

Deep cleaning your house, trying to remove stains from your tile or marble floors, and disinfecting your bathroom can be a daunting and difficult task. A few general safety tips to remember, regardless of what part of the house you are cleaning:
• Never mix chemicals.
• Be sure the room you're working in is well ventilated.
• Read the warning labels on anything you use. Often, in deep cleaning, people use stronger cleaning solutions. Don't take protecting your skin and eyes lightly.
Here are some ideas for tackling your spring cleaning projects.
Cleaning Grout:
1. Be sure to sweep, clean, and mop your tiled floor as you normally would.
2. In a large bucket, mix a 1 to 2 ratio of a cleaner (such as Ceremiclean) to each gallon of water.
3. With a sponge mop, apply the solution from Step 2 onto the surface of your tile floor.
4. If your grout and tile are especially dirty, once Step 3 has dried, rinse the surface with fresh, clean, water.
5. Mix an oxygen bleach solution in a separate container. If you have colored grout find a strong solution sans bleach.
6. Apply this new solution directly to the grout.
7. Let it sit and soak in for at least 5 minutes.
8. Loosen the stains by scrubbing the whole area with a grout brush (a firm, synthetic brush; too soft of a brush will require more work on your part to loosen the stains, while a metal brush will wear away the grout).
9. Rinse again with the mop sponge and clean, fresh water.
10. Let the tile and grout dry overnight.
11. Apply a grout sealer the next day to keep your grout from getting stained in the future, being sure to test an inconspicuous spot before applying to the whole floor.
12. Apply a second coat of grout sealer after 30 minutes. Then let it dry for at least an hour.
13. A good rule of thumb is to re-apply the grout sealer once a year.
Disinfecting Bathrooms:
1. Take all removable items such as all decorations, rugs, towels, wastebaskets, soap dispensers, toothbrushes, etc. and clean them outside of the bathroom as per their individual instructions and labels.
2. To make deep cleaning easier, sweep and dust to remove surface dirt.
3. Tackle the dirtiest area of the bathroom, working from the top down. Whatever your biggest problem area is, come up with the best and easiest way to fix it, whether it is showerhead deposit build up from water or stained tile grout. Whatever means you decide to use to clean it, most directions will recommend to let it sit.
4. While step 3 is left undisturbed, start at the highest point of the bathroom and work down. Start by cleaning where the wall and ceiling meet, making sure there are no cobwebs.
5. In a bucket, mix an all-purpose cleaning solution with hot water (or according to directions). With a firm synthetic brush, scrub all the hard surfaces in your bathroom, such as the counters, tile, shower, sink, etc. Depending how dirty your bathroom is, you may need to rinse all cleaned areas with clean water. Especially don't forget to clean the underneath areas of faucets, toilets, etc.
6. Depending on what kind of walls you have in your bathroom, be sure to also clean them. Tile is easiest to disinfect (simply include them in Step 5). But don't neglect disinfecting painted or wall-papered walls too, especially near the toilet.
7. Be sure to go back and finish up whatever was started in Step 3.
